Women in Healthcare Spotlight On: Pamela Cipriano

Elected in June 2013, Dr. Pamela Cipriano currently serves as the the 35th president of the American Nurses Association (ANA), which represents the interests of the United State’s 3.1 million registered nurses. A leader in the nursing field, she is known nationally for advocating for equality in healthcare. Before assuming office as the President, she was involved with the ANA for many years at various levels including serving two terms on the Board of Directors, receiving the association’s 2008 Distinguished Membership Award for her outstanding contributions, and serving as the inaugural editor-in-chief of American Nurse Today, the official journal of the ANA. In addition, she currently holds a faculty appointment as research associate professor at the UVA School of Nursing. Previous positions include Senior Director for the health care management consulting at Galloway Advisory by iVantage, faculty member at the University of Virginia, Nurse Scholar in Residence at the Institute of Medicine, and Chief Nursing and Chief Clinical Officer at the University of Virginia Health System. Dr. Cipriano serves on the board of directors and committees for many organizations including the National Quality Forum and the Joint Commission. Other awards and honors include Distinguish Alumni Award, University of Utah College of Nursing (2014) and the Magnet Recognition for Nursing Excellence, awarded to the University of Virginia Health System by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (2006.)
