The Friday Five – National Nutrition Month
Follow and join the conversation with #NationalNutritionMonth, #eatright and #NNMchat.
National Nutrition Month® is an awareness campaign created by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics (@eatright). This years theme “Go Further With Food,” highlights the effect of being able to go the farthest when you are choosing healthy foods. This week’s Friday Five looks at what you can do to make healthier choices when eating meals and snacks to help create and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
Media Free Meals: A Must
The debate about how much screen time, for adults and children, is healthy may never be resolved. However, most can see the pitfalls when it comes to eating in front of the “tube” or other screen. The American Academy of Pediatrics (@AmerAcadPeds) has some advice to offer about media free meals and how to implement them.

Whole grains vs. Refined
When given the choice one should always go with whole grains whenever possible. Refined grains are basically stripped of any and all nutrients that are beneficial to our bodies and health. Therefore, don’t be afraid of “carbs,” just those that are highly processed. Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health (@HarvardPublicHealth) offers some guidance and information when choosing whole grains.

My Plate – 5 Easy Snack Hacks
Often we overeat or make unhealthy choices because we simply wait too long until our next meal and let ourselves become ravenous. USDA’s ChooseMyPlate.gov offers five simple ways you can help stave off hunger when in between meals and on the go.
Keep a handful of unsalted nuts or dried fruit in your bag or car. It makes healthy snacking easy in case hunger strikes. More tips: https://t.co/GXbTqrQI28 pic.twitter.com/vcw0VbVtVG
