The Friday Five – National Health Center Week
Follow and join the conversation with #NHCW19 and #ValueCHCs.
National Health Center Week is an annual celebration with the goal of raising awareness about the mission and accomplishments of America’s health centers over the past five decades. According to the National Association of Community Health Centers (@NACHC), health centers serve 28 million patients, a number that continues to grow along with the demand for affordable primary care. In support of National Health Centers Week, August 4th – 10th, our Friday Five takes a look at what health centers have to offer, how you can help support them and how you can participate in this week’s events.
Conversations on Healthcare
Weekdays at 1:00 am, 9:00 am and 5:00 pm ET
One of the shows in our station’s line up is Conversations on Health Care, focused on reform and innovation in the health care system. Each week, hosts Mark Masselli and Margaret Flinter interview a thought leader from the realm of health policy, health innovation, health technology and global health. Conversations is recorded at WESU at Wesleyan University, and is underwritten by Community Health Center, Inc., a leading independent, non-profit healthcare provider in the state of Connecticut, begun in 1972 and co-founded by Mark Masselli.
On one of the first episodes we aired, Masselli and Flinter spoke with Dan Hawkins, Sr. VP for Public Policy and Research at the National Association of Community Health Centers (NACHC), which supports the thousands of CHCs providing care for 27 million underserved Americans. They discuss the care model that embeds behavioral and dental care within primary care, the growing reliance on Nurse Practitioners as front line clinicians, and the training, innovation and quality care the nation’s health centers provide.

A Health Center Looks Beneath the Surface… And Dives Right In
According to Direct Relief, whether they’re arranging secure housing or preventing childhood traumas, the Santa Barbara Neighborhood Clinics are removing the barriers that keep their patients from experiencing good health. SBNC is supported by local philanthropy efforts – including Direct Relief, which provides medicines and supplies that help defray the health center’s costs. The organization contributed more than $1.2 million worth of medical goods in 2018.
