By now most of us know that October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Every year at this time an international campaign is organized by all of the major breast cancer charities to increase awareness and raise funds in support of the disease. The campaign also provides information and support to those affected by breast cancer. This week’s Friday Five offers some good advice for dealing with breast cancer as well as the latest news and information about the disease and which charity organizations are doing the most good.
This Is What Breast Cancer Activism Looked Like Before the Pink Ribbon
Most of us cannot recall a time when October wasn’t awash in pink and breast cancer campaigns and messages didn’t consume the airwaves. However, that time was not too long ago when breast cancer was considered an “unspeakable” condition and women who were diagnosed had little or no support from anyone who wasn’t the closest of family. Time (@TIME) magazine’s article gives us the history behind bringing breast cancer out of the shadows and into the light.

Most of our lives have been touched in some way by cancer and many of us have direct experience with breast cancer. When a friend or loved one is diagnosed we want to help in any way we can. This can often be a daunting task and patient priors and/or follow ups can get lost in the shuffle. RamSoft Inc. (@Ramsoft), a healthcare IT software and services company, suggests five changes you can make to improve breast cancer tracking and reporting within your facility.
Top Charities Working to Prevent and Cure Breast Cancer
While October is designated as Breast Cancer Month, the fundraising, education, and awareness are not limited to this time of year. Charities work hard all year around holding events, selling products, hosting walks and runs, and planning galas to support their breast cancer missions. It can be difficult to know if the organization you are supporting is truly helping the cause or mainly lining their pockets. Charity Navigator (@CharityNav) does the research for you and empowers donors to make an informed decision by providing a list of the top rated breast cancer charities.
