The Friday Five – Mental Health Month
Follow and join the conversation with #MHM2017, #riskybusiness and #mentalhealth.
Mental Health America (@mentalhealtham) and their affiliates have led the observance of Mental Health Month every May since 1949. Each year the organization works to spread the word that mental health is something everyone should consider and support. The theme for this year’s MHM is Risky Business, habits and behaviors that increase the risk of developing or exacerbating mental illnesses, or could be signs of mental health problems themselves. This week’s Friday Five focuses on taking care of our mental health and bringing awareness to the risk factors and warning signs of mental illness.
Mental Health Screening Tools
Mental Health America was founded in 1909 and is a community-based nonprofit dedicated to addressing the needs of those living with mental illness and to promoting the overall mental health of all Americans. MHA offers several different screening tools which can be used online to help determine whether you or a loved one may have some symptoms of a mental health disorder. The site also offers a wealth of information and resources regarding mental health and what to do if you believe you have a condition.

Annual Zarrow Mental Health Symposium — Challenging Injustice and Discrimination
While this conference doesn’t take place during Mental Health Month there is no time like the present to arrange your travel and plan to attend. The two day event is being presented by the Mental Health Association Oklahoma in October and will focus on how issues of injustice and discrimination influence and interact with mental health. Dr Cornel West, a prominent and provocative democratic intellectual, will one of the keynote speakers at the symposium.

The Friday Five – World Health Day 4/7
We dedicated one of our April Friday Five posts to World Health Day which is sponsored by the World Health Organization. This year’s World Health Day focused on WHO’s year long campaign, Depression: Let’s Talk. In case you missed it, our Friday Five offered a wealth of information about depression, the latest research and how to cope with it if you or a loved one are effected.

Are You Addicted to the Internet?
It is clear that most of us these days are very attached to our WiFi and many of us spend a great deal of time each day on our devices. But when is it too much? MHA puts it all together for you in their quick but informative Risky Business Fact Sheet. Read it and use the Check Yourself section to find out if you may in fact have an addiction.
