The Friday Five – By the Numbers on COVID
As we approach the year anniversary of what the majority of our country thought was going to be just a two week shut down, we now know the statistics surrounding the coronavirus global pandemic change constantly. From reported cases, recovered cases, deaths, vaccine progress, doses administered, to fully vaccinated regions, COVID-19 data changes quickly and frequently. How many cases are worldwide compared to in the United States? How many approved vaccines are there and how is my state doing when it comes to fully vaccinated the population? For today’s Friday Five we take a closer look at COVID-19 by the numbers.
Cases: Active and Recovered
There have been 115,467,624 worldwide confirmed COVID-19 cases. 47,679,967 are considered active cases. The data indicates that 65,332,965 are recovered cases. In the United States alone, there has been 29,130,219 confirmed cases, of those, 28,604,659 are active. While there is data for recovered cases worldwide, the United States does not have a standard definition for what this means or a uniform way of reporting such data. For the most up-to-date numbers in any region the COVID-19 Tracker gets its information from both the CDC, the WHO, and more.
As of March 1, national forecasts predict that 4,400–12,900 new #COVID19 deaths will be reported during the week ending March 27, bringing the projected total number of deaths to 540,000–564,000. More: https://t.co/rcqjOX3Ypl. pic.twitter.com/EPoWsZBpKa

Cases: Fatal
Of the 115,467,624 worldwide confirmed cases, 2,565,369 have died from this disease. The United States reports 525,560 deaths. For the most up-to-date numbers in any region the COVID-19 Tracker gets its information from both the CDC, the WHO, and more.

Approved Vaccines
There are now three U.S. COVID-19 vaccines: Pfizer-BioTech, Moderna, and Janssen/Johnson & Johnson.
- Pfizer-BioTech: Diluent: 0.9% sodium chloride (normal saline, preservative-free.) Vaccine must be mixed with diluent before administration. Dosage: 0.3 mL
16 years of age and older, 2-dose series separated by 21 days. Administered by Intramuscular (IM) injection in the deltoid muscle. - Moderna: Do not mix with a diluent. Dosage: 0.5 mL. 18 years of age and older. 2-dose series separated by 28 days. Administered by intramuscular (IM) injection in the deltoid muscle.
- Janssen (Johnson & Johnson): Dosage: 0.5mL, 18 years of age and older, single dose, administered by intramuscular (IM) injection in the deltoid muscle
There’s now a third safe COVID-19 vaccine, so we asked Dr. Fauci to walk us through the newly-authorized Johnson & Johnson option: The way it works, it’s effectiveness, and whether he’d take it himself. (The answer is yes!) pic.twitter.com/Zb0eYQzNTU

Administered Vaccines
275,800,000 vaccines have been administered across the globe. This means 0.74% of the total population is fully vaccinated. 2.06% of the population have received at least one dose. The United States has administered 80,500,000 vaccines, 8.06 of the total population fully vaccinated and 15.8% having received at least dose 1. To monitor, the ever changes numbers and percentages of administered vaccines in any part of the world, consult the Covid-19 Tracker.
#DYK? As of March 1, 2021, 15.3% of the U.S. population had received at least one dose of #COVID19 vaccine. Track vaccination progress at the national and state or territorial level on CDC’s COVID Data Tracker: https://t.co/84oerWgCSR. pic.twitter.com/LWdwSGe6E2
