The Friday Five – National Health IT Week Recap
This past week thousands took to social media to share their #IHeartHIT and #HITworks stories to show how health IT transforms lives, thought leaders from around the nation came together both virtually and physically to raise awareness, and there was even a Virtual March on the States encouraging state officials to support innovative telehealth services and other health technologies. New to NHIT Week this year, was the National Health IT Student Challenge in which HIMSS challenged students from health policy, informatics, public policy, computer science, public health and other related academic programs across the country to devise and implement innovative advocacy activities focused on advancing public health IT awareness in their state or region. This week’s Friday Five takes a look at these and other notable moments from NHIT Week 2016.
ONC Opens National Health IT Week with New Guides
In the spirit of Health IT Week the ONC (@ONC_HealthIT) launched two practical, easy-to-understand tools, (one new and one updated), in order to help clinicians and hospitals get the most out of their health information technology. The first is a new guide, EHR Contracts Untangled, which is designed to help health providers who are negotiating EHR systems contracts. The second, Health IT Playbook, is a dynamic, web-based tool intended to make it easy for providers and their practices to find practical information and guidance on specific topics as they research, buy, use, or switch EHRs.
Inspiring Progress with #IHeartHIT Stories
Throughout the week people shared their personal #IHeartHIT stories to show policymakers the impact HIT is having and that supporting innovation in health technology is the right thing to do. From young to old, everyone can benefit from HIT. You can read a collection of these stories on the National Health IT website. We highlighted two of our favorites below.

#AskVindell Twitter Chat
On Tuesday Dr. Vindell Washington (@VindellW), the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology (ONC), answered questions during his first Twitter chat in honor of #NHITWeek. He enjoyed the conversation and looks forward to keeping it going. National Partnership asked the question below. Take the attached quiz to find out what your digital disposition is.

NEW VIDEO: Giving Patients and Providers the Keys to Their Health Data
Also on Tuesday, HHS (@HHSGov) and ONC released a new whiteboard video highlighting how health IT is foundational to help reform our health care delivery system. It is important during National Health IT Week to remember that we all are working to unlock health care data and put it to work when and where doctors, individuals, and hospitals need it.
