About the ABA Breast Cancer Task Force
Both women were instrumental in the start of the American Bar Association’s Breast Cancer Initiative. Ms. Young became involved after beating breast cancer herself, while Ms. Rangel joined the cause after attending a workshop and realizing the need for legal guidance after losing her close friend to breast cancer. Both are now a part of the Breast Cancer Initiatives Executive Committee with Ms. Rangel as Chair and Ms. Young, council Liaison.

The Interview
During Matt’s interview Young and Rangel impart a great deal of knowledge for both health care attorneys and patients alike. The Iniatiative’s mission is broad but the heart of it is to educate attorneys across the country to be advocates and provide pro bono work for cancer patients and survivors regarding the various legal issues they may face. Unfortunately navigating insurance, understanding laws about employment, handling financial challenges, resolving custody rights and more are all part of a cancer patient’s reality. A health care attorney who specializes in this area can help take the weight from a patient’s shoulders so she or he can focus on their diagnosis.
Throughout the interview the two provide tips and advice on everything from getting a second opinion to taking the time to create a supportive care team. They even shed some light on how best to handle appointments, what family and friends can do to support a cancer patient and how and where to find the best cancer resources in your area.
