This week’s Friday Five is dedicated to our hosts and their upcoming work at HIMSS18.
David Harlow, JD MPH
David Harlow, JD MPH (@healthblawg) is a healthcare lawyer and consultant with over thirty years of public and private sector experience, which gives him a unique perspective on legal, policy and business issues facing the healthcare community. He has deep expertise in digital health law, policy and strategy, including healthcare data privacy and security planning and compliance. He counsels health care providers, health data analytics firms, technology providers, health app developers and others on a broad range of healthcare and business issues. Here is what David is looking forward to at HIMSS18:
Speaking with healthcare innovation leaders from all around the country at a conference like HIMSS is an opportunity to learn more about how different folks are hacking away at common challenges. I often refer to the fifty states as fifty laboratories; the saying goes that if you’ve seen one academic medical center, you’ve seen … one academic medical center; and, well, at HIMSS, we’ll see enough vendors and providers to block out the sun. A key challenge in health IT is to develop and deploy solutions in a scalable manner, but that is in constant dynamic tension with each and every provider organization’s uniqueness. Each patient is also unique, and the tidal wave of personalized medicine based on data-driven insights is going to wash over all of us. I’m looking forward to learning something new about tools, about implementations and about new ideas. The bleeding-edge thinking in the air at HIMSS, or on the air in my conversations with healthcare innovators on Harlow On Healthcare, will inform the broader solutions of tomorrow across many realms, including precision medicine, population health (the other side of the coin), and the technological, policy and payment frameworks necessary to enable their success.

Matt’s health law practice includes advising clients on complying with requirements of HIPAA, the Stark Law, the Anti-Kickback Statute, and other regulations in the context of daily operations, contractual arrangements, and relationships. He is the co-chair of the American Bar Association Health Law Section’s Distance Learning Committee and a Vice-chair of both the Emerging Issues in Health Law Conference Planning Committee and Marketing Committee. Her is what Matt is planning for at HIMSS18:
I intend to focus on solutions that will help support and advance alternative payment models since the focus remains on changing the manner in which health care is reimbursed, which often transitions to stating that succeeding in alternative payments or value based care will lie upon the ability to obtain, analyze and act upon good data. Following HIMSS18, I will translate what I have learned into interviews with key individuals from those organizations that are at the forefront of supporting the movement into alternative payment models and are offering unique solutions in that regard.
To hear more of what Matt has to say, from a legal point of view, on the hottest healthcare issues of the day tune in to Healthcare de Jure weekdays at 2:00 pm, 10:00 pm and 6:00 am ET. From public policies and Federal initiatives to privacy and security, join Matt as he and his guests discuss a smorgasbord of topics, giving hospitals, physicians, vendors and patients a seat at the table. Matt’s virtual conversations can be listened to on demand on our Healthcare de Jure SoundCloud Playlist or heard on air. So don’t miss a minute of what’s on the menu.

Dr. Nick plans on getting a lot out of HIMSS 18, including his share of fun:
My focus will be engaging with the community to amplify the knowledge learning opportunities of myself, my friends and colleagues and the social audience but above all to have fun and a wee dram of single Scottish malt whisky.
For years Dr. Nick has served as a voice on the impact of new technologies on healthcare, earning a reputation as a leading authority on where the future of medicine is going.
