This Month's Episode: Paging Christopher Nolan: The Endless Loop of AI Watching AI
This month’s episode of “News You Can Use” on Healthcare NOW Radio features news from the month of October 2024.
The show that gives you a quick insight into the latest news, twists, turns, and debacles going on in healthcare with my friend and co-host Craig Joseph, MD (@CraigJoseph) Chief Medical Officer at Nordic Consulting Partners and myself, where every diagnosis comes with a side of humor. We hope you stay curious, stay engaged, and keep seeking the truth in healthcare in a world that thrives on information.
Buckle up as we dive into the ER of excitement, the ICU of irrationality, and the waiting room of wacky wisdom in this month’s show that features a review of:
- Fully Automating Everything with AI
- AI Training
- Are GLP-1drugs a cure all
- HLTH Conference Sold (already)
- IV Shortages
When Your Hall Monitor Needs a Hall Monitor
In this month’s episode of “Healthcare’s Mysteries,” we dive into the AI revolution in healthcare with all the enthusiasm of kids getting a new toy – except this toy occasionally makes stuff up. We discuss the fascinating world of AI transcription in exam rooms, where apparently the solution to AI making mistakes is… more AI! It’s like hiring a hall monitor to watch the hall monitor, which leads to an infinite loop of AI supervision that would make Christopher Nolan’s head spin.
And on that note – where exactly do we get the training data and how do we protect the creative talents moving past the archaic “Protected Use”? Indeed Craig thinks we will want to record and store everything which is that Black Mirror Episode – The Entire History of Me:
We tackle the hot topic of GLP-1 drugs, which are being touted as the miracle cure for everything from diabetes to bad hair days. They’re so amazing that Craig suggests we might just replace fluoride in the water with them – who needs teeth when you can have a wonder drug? We briefly discuss the recent sale of the HLTH conference (pronounced “health” by those in the know, because apparently vowels are so 2023), reminiscing about the good old pandemic days when getting a Q-tip up your nose was the price of admission.
Finally, we discussed the great IV shortage of 2024, brought to you by Hurricane Helene’s visit to a Baxter plant. This crisis has led to some creative solutions, particularly in pediatrics, where “oral is the new IV” has become the trendy new healthcare slogan. Kids are now encouraged to chug whatever liquids they can get their hands on before surgery, turning pre-op into what sounds like a juice box championship.
We close by noting that while these shortages are concerning, they’re forcing healthcare to rethink some practices – proving that sometimes the best innovations come when we’re backed into a corner with nothing but a Gatorade and a dream.
We hope you enjoy our take on the latest news and developments in healthcare and want to help you keep untangling the web of information, dodging the sensational pitfalls, and emerging victorious, albeit a little dizzy, on the other side. In the end, the stories we uncover, and the discussions we ignite, all shape the narrative of our shared future. We want to hear from you especially if you have topics covered or questions you’d like answered. You can reach out directly via the contact form on my website, or send a message on LinkedIn to Craig or me.
Until next week keep solving healthcare’s mysteries before they become your emergencies.
