This week’s Friday Five is brought to us by Cheetah Learning (@CheetahLearning), a leader in Accelerated Exam Prep for the Project Management Professional exam (PMP®). According to Michelle LaBrosse, founder and CEO, in order to improve project outcomes, healthcare needs more certified PMPs managing projects. Here are 5 strategies for better project management in healthcare.
Start Fewer Initiatives
YES – you read right. When you take the time to do a thorough feasibility analysis, establish the cost-benefit analysis, and evaluate the potential risks you could encounter, it’s likely most projects won’t even get off the ground. This saves you a lot of time and effort in the long run.
Align Projects with Current Strategies
To determine which initiatives best fulfill your current strategic objectives, evaluate all of your potential and ongoing projects. ONLY engage in projects that are consistent with the direction your company is taking. Evaluate ongoing projects every three months to determine whether they are still worthwhile.
Deliver Results, FAST
Make sure you can deliver something of utility to whomever is paying for your project early in the project’s life. No one likes to wait to see results. Show results in tangible ways, FAST.
Reduce Risks of Completion
It’s a good idea to regularly evaluate the risks to the success of your project. Create plans to eliminate, decrease and manage your risks after identifying them. Determine who is in charge of lowering your risks with project completion and what will motivate their accountability for it.
Know what “Finished” Means
Review what it means to complete the project as a group once you’ve made the decision to pursue or continue it. Do this BEFORE starting or continuing to work on your projects. Before a project even starts, scope creep may already be there. You’re much more likely to actually accomplish the project if everyone involved is committed to what it means to finish it.
