For more than 20 years, the Society for Public Health Education (@SOPHEtweets) has celebrated National Health Education Week, in collaboration with the Department of Health and Human Services, during the third week of October, this year being October 16 – 20, 2023. The purpose of NHEW is to increase national awareness on major public health issues and promote a better understanding of the role of health education. This year’s NHEW is focused on advancing health, equity and civial rights. Our Friday Five provides the daily themes of the week, webinars to attend, information about Health Literacy Month and much more.
2023 Daily Themes
This year NHEW will focus on advancing health, equity and civil rights. Each day of the week has a special theme around which organizations can plan activities. The daily themes are as follows:
Monday, October 16: Behind the Screen: Adolescents’ Mental Health
Tuesday, October 17: Maternal You Should Know About Maternal & Child Health
Wednesday, October 18: Health as a Civil Right
Thursday, October 19: Impact of Social Media & Misinformation on Health Communications
Friday, October 20: Advancing Health Equity Through Advocacy
SOPHE provides materials and suggestions for ways to share messages using a variety of channels to communicate a message is most effective.

IHA Health Literacy
For more than 20 years, October has been recognized as Health Literacy Month. Health Literacy Month is a time of international observance when hospitals, health centers, literacy programs, libraries, social service agencies, businesses, professional associations, government agencies, consumer alliances, and many other groups work collaboratively to integrate and expand the mission of health literacy.
