Cybersecurity Awareness Month Recap
For more than two decades, Cybersecurity Awareness Month has been dedicated to teaching everyone how to stay safe and secure online. It was created as a collaborative effort between government and industry to ensure every American has the resources they need to stay safer and more secure online. It was launched by the National Cybersecurity Alliance and the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in October 2004 as a broad effort to help all Americans stay safer and more secure online.
Throughout October we spotlighted cybersecurity in healthcare on Health IT Answers. Here are five highlights to recap.
What Do the Experts Say?
Each year we choose topics that continue to be stinking points for security in healthcare. We go to the experts and ask for comments and tips. This year we covered three topics.
Topic 1: Phishing
Phishing continues to be the most prevalent cybersecurity threat in healthcare. And the most common of those is through email. We asked why this continues to be a challenge? What recommendations do they have for IT teams to help this problem?
Topic 2: Zero Trust
Experts say one of the best approaches to fighting cybercrime for healthcare organizations is Zero Trust, a security framework that relies on strong authentication and authorization for every device and every person before any access or data transfer takes place on a private network. According to an Okta report, 47% of healthcare organizations have a zero trust initiative in place, and 38% have plans to begin one in the next six to 12 months.
We asked what recommendations for those that have plans to adopting strategies? And what recommendations do they have for the 15% of the organizations not in the mix of having or adopting strategies?
Topic 3: Ransomware Attacks
2023 until now has seen record highs for ransomware attacks, ransom payments and data breaches in the healthcare industry. As attacks evolve, many hospitals are beginning to recognize that their aging infrastructure and IT systems are not sufficient protections for the well-being of their patients, facilities and finances.
We asked what recommendations would they give to IT teams on defending their healthcare ecosystems?
